EPC Contract for Liquefaction Trains

A multinational engineering consortium is to commence development at the Rovuma onshore LNG production complex project in Mozambique, paving the way for construction of two giant liquefaction trains.

The engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded to the JFT consortium, a collaboration between TechnipFMC, JGC Corp, Fluor Corp. Work will cover a range of breakbulk activity across the construction phase of the mega project, located in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique.

“We are extremely honored to have been awarded by MRV this new prestigious LNG project along with our long-time partners, JGC and Fluor. This award confirms the market recognition of TechnipFMC’s expertise and track record in gas monetization and, in particular, in the LNG industry,” said Nello Uccelletti, president onshore/offshore at TechnipFMC.

Energy Transition Journey

The ambitious project envisages construction of two natural gas liquefaction trains, with a total LNG nameplate capacity of 15.2 million tonnes per annum.

“TechnipFMC is a strong player in Mozambique, a strategic country for the company, and already present through key LNG and subsea on-going projects. We are proud to serve our customer for the Rovuma project and will continue to accompany the industrial growth of the country,” Uccelletti said, adding that it would reinforce the firm’s “positioning in the energy transition journey.”

Domestic Support

The contract was awarded by Mozambique Rovuma Venture, a joint-venture composed of energy majors Eni, ExxonMobil and CNPC. The joint-venture partners hold a combined 70 percent interest in the exploration and production concession of Area 4 in Mozambique.

Hydrocarbon explorers Galp, Kogas and Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH) each hold a 10 percent stake in the project.

“This is the third development plan approved in this five-year period to enable the sustainable development of the huge natural gas reserves discovered in the Rovuma Basin … We want Mozambican entrepreneurs and Mozambicans to be the main beneficiaries of the various business opportunities made available by the multinationals,” said Ernesto Elias Max Tonela, minister of mineral resources and energy.

Once the Rovuma LNG Project is complete, MRV will produce, liquefy and market natural gas extracted from three reservoirs of the Mamba complex located in Area 4.
