Engineering and construction firms Subsea 7 has been awarded a "sizeable" contract by Shell for an offshore gas export project in the North Sea.

The scope of work includes all engineering, procurement, construction, transportation and installation work for a new gas export pipeline, riser and associated subsea infrastructure at the Haewene Brim Floating Production Storage and Offloading.

“This award recognizes our extensive knowledge of Shell’s North Sea developments, gained over almost 30 years of working closely together to deliver safe and cost-effective construction, inspection, repair and maintenance operations across Shell’s European offshore fields and facilities,” said Jonathan Tame, vice president UK & Canada.

Depressurization

First launched in 1999, the Hæwene Brim FPSO operates at the Pierce field in the UK sector of the North Sea.
“Project management and detailed engineering has commenced at Subsea 7’s office in Aberdeen,” a Subsea 7 spokesperson said.

The new project will see Subsea 7 bring its offshore expertise to bear on depressurization to modify the existing FPSO to upgrade the Pierce oilfield.

Offshore Work Slated for 2020

Located about 160 miles offshore, east of Aberdeen, the EPCI work will focus on tie-ins at the FPSO. Offshore activities are scheduled to extend over 2020 and 2021. The final investment decision (FID) for the upgrade was taken by Shell and its partner Ithaca Energy this week.

"This important development of the Pierce field will allow us to unlock additional gas reserves for the UK," said Steve Phimister, head of Shell's North Sea.

Registered in Luxembourg, Subsea 7 predominantly focuses on serving the offshore energy industry and recently announced a reorganization of its renewables and heavy-lifting business unit into four divisions: Seaway Heavy Lifting, Seaway Offshore Cables, Seaway Renewables North and Seaway Renewables South.
